A G+1 house has around 20 doors, 25 windows and 30 grid bubbles. If you draw each one with lines and arcs, you’ll spend a day drawing and another day fixing them when the architect changes the door size. AutoCAD blocks solve this.
With blocks, you draw a door once, insert it 20 times, and change all 20 in ten seconds. With attributes, your title block fills itself in and your door schedule counts itself.
This is Lesson 5 of our free AutoCAD for Civil Engineers series. This is the lesson where AutoCAD stops feeling like drawing and starts feeling like engineering.

Create AutoCAD Layers Without Repetitive Setup
Save time on manual layer setup. Use our AutoCAD Layer LISP Generator to create organized layers with custom names, colours and lineweights.
Build your layer setup and simplify your drafting workflow.
What Is a Block in AutoCAD?

A block is a group of objects saved as one named object. You define it once, and every copy you place (called an instance or insert) points back to that one definition.
Three reasons this matters on real projects:
- Change once, update everywhere. Edit the block definition and every instance updates.
- Smaller files. 50 doors as blocks store the geometry once, not 50 times.
- Countable. AutoCAD can count blocks and extract their data into a schedule.
| Block | Typical civil use |
|---|---|
| Door, window, ventilator | Floor plans |
| Grid bubble | Structural and architectural plans |
| Column, footing mark | Foundation and column layout plans |
| Level symbol | Sections and elevations |
| North arrow, section marker | Every plan |
| Manhole, chamber, street light | Site and road drawings |
| Title block | Every sheet |
The Layer 0 Rule (Read This First)
This one rule separates clean blocks from messy ones:
Simple rule: Draw block geometry on layer 0, with colour, linetype and lineweight set to ByBlock or ByLayer.
Why? Objects on layer 0 inside a block take the layer of the block insert. So a door block inserted on A-DOOR behaves like A-DOOR: same colour, same plot weight, freezes with A-DOOR.
If you draw the door on A-DOOR and also insert it on A-WALL, you get a confusing mix. Freeze A-WALL and half the door stays visible.
| Inside the block, objects are on | Result when inserted on A-DOOR |
|---|---|
| Layer 0, ByLayer | Looks and behaves exactly like A-DOOR ✅ |
| Layer 0, ByBlock | Takes colour/linetype from the insert ✅ |
| Layer A-WALL, colour red | Stays red on A-WALL no matter where you insert it ❌ |
The one exception: blocks with fixed parts like a title block can keep their own layers (G-TTLB from Lesson 1).
How to Create a Block (Step by Step)
Let’s make a 900 mm door block.
- Set layer 0 current.
- Draw the door leaf: a line 900 long (the shutter) and a quarter-circle ARC of radius 900 for the swing. Use OSNAP from Lesson 2.
- Type B (BLOCK) and press Enter.
- Name:
DOOR-900. - Base point: click Pick point and choose the hinge corner. This is where the cursor will hold the door when you insert it.
- Objects: click Select objects and pick the leaf and arc.
- Choose Convert to block (keeps it in place as a block).
- Tick Allow exploding: off (prevents accidental explode). Click OK.
Insert It
- Set layer A-DOOR current.
- Type I (INSERT). In AutoCAD 2020 and newer this opens the Blocks palette.
- Pick DOOR-900, click at the wall opening corner, and set rotation.
- To flip the swing, use MIRROR (MI) or a negative X scale.
Beginner trap: Choose the base point carefully. A door with its base point in the middle of nowhere is painful to place. Always use a logical corner: the hinge, the centre of a bubble, the bottom-left of a title block.
AutoCAD Blocks: Commands You Need
| Command | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| BLOCK | B | Create a block inside the current drawing |
| INSERT | I | Place a block (opens the Blocks palette in 2020+) |
| WBLOCK | W | Save a block as its own .dwg file for your library |
| BEDIT | BE | Open the Block Editor to change a block definition |
| REFEDIT | (none) | Edit a block in place without leaving the drawing |
| ATTDEF | ATT | Create an attribute (a text field inside a block) |
| EATTEDIT | (double-click) | Edit attribute values of one insert |
| BATTMAN | (none) | Manage attributes in a block definition |
| ATTSYNC | (none) | Push attribute changes to existing inserts |
| PURGE | PU | Remove unused blocks, layers and styles |
| COUNT | (none) | Count blocks (AutoCAD 2022+). Older versions: BCOUNT (Express Tools) |
| DATAEXTRACTION | (none) | Export block counts and attributes to a table or Excel |
Attributes: Blocks That Hold Information
An attribute is a text field inside a block. Each insert can have a different value while the geometry stays the same.
Perfect examples in civil drawings:
- Grid bubble: the circle is the same; the label changes (A, B, C or 1, 2, 3).
- Door mark: D, D1, D2 next to the door.
- Level symbol: +0.000, +3.150, +6.300.
- Title block: drawing title, number, scale, date, drawn by, checked by.
Create a Grid Bubble With an Attribute
- On layer 0, draw a CIRCLE with radius 5 × drawing scale. For 1:100 that’s 500 (a 10 mm bubble on paper).
- Type ATT (ATTDEF):
- Tag:
GRID - Prompt:
Grid label - Default:
A - Justification: Middle center
- Text style: TCS-TEXT (from Lesson 3), height 350 (3.5 mm at 1:100)
- Tag:
- Click OK and place the attribute at the centre of the circle (OSNAP Center).
- Type B, name it
GRID-BUBBLE, base point = quadrant of the circle where the grid line meets it, select the circle and the attribute, OK.
Now each time you insert it, AutoCAD asks “Grid label”. Type B, C, D… Done.
Useful trick: For more on where to place grid bubbles and how far from the building, read our guide on Grid Bubble Placement in AutoCAD.
Attribute Modes Explained
| Mode | Meaning | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Invisible | Value stored but not shown | Hidden data like door material, cost |
| Constant | Same value in every insert | Company name in title block |
| Verify | Asks you to confirm the value | Important data like drawing number |
| Preset | Uses the default without asking | Fields you rarely change |
| Lock position | Attribute can’t be dragged | Title blocks |
| Multiple lines | Paragraph-style attribute | Long drawing titles |
If You Change Attributes Later
You added a new attribute (for example REVISION) to the title block definition, but old inserts don’t show it. Run ATTSYNC, choose the block name, and all inserts update.
Title Block With Attributes
Build your title block once, with these attributes on its layer G-TTLB:
| Tag | Prompt | Example value |
|---|---|---|
| PROJECT | Project name | Proposed G+1 Residence |
| CLIENT | Client name | Mr. R. Sharma |
| DWG_TITLE | Drawing title | Ground Floor Plan |
| DWG_NO | Drawing number | TCS-A-101 |
| SCALE | Scale | 1:100 |
| DATE | Date | 18-10-2026 |
| DRAWN | Drawn by | AK |
| CHECKED | Checked by | SP |
| REV | Revision | R0 |
Save it with W (WBLOCK) as TCS-TITLE-A3.dwg in your block library folder. Every project now starts with the same professional sheet, and you fill it in by double-clicking.
Dynamic Blocks: One Door for Every Size
Indian residential plans typically use several door sizes, for example:
| Mark | Width | Typical location |
|---|---|---|
| D | 1000 mm | Main entrance |
| D1 | 900 mm | Bedrooms, kitchen |
| D2 | 750 mm | Toilets |
Instead of three blocks, make one dynamic door:
- Type BE and open
DOOR-900. - From Block Authoring Palettes → Parameters, add a Linear parameter along the door width.
- Add a Stretch action (or Scale action) linked to that parameter and the door geometry.
- In the parameter’s Properties, set Distance type: List with values 750, 900, 1000.
- Add a Flip parameter with a Flip action to swap the swing direction.
- Save the block and close the editor.
Now click any door, drag the grip to 750, 900 or 1000, and click the flip arrow to change the swing.
Quick tip: Start simple. A door with a width list and a flip covers 90% of what you need. Visibility states and lookup tables can come later.
Build a Block Library (Stop Redrawing)
- Create a folder like
D:\CAD-Library\TCS-Blocks\. - Save each block with W (WBLOCK) as its own file:
DOOR-DYN.dwg,WINDOW-DYN.dwg,GRID-BUBBLE.dwg,LEVEL.dwg,NORTH.dwg,TCS-TITLE-A3.dwg. - In the Blocks palette (INSERT), open the Libraries tab and point it to that folder.
- Or open Tool Palettes (Ctrl+3) and drag your blocks onto a “Civil” palette for one-click insert.
Your library, your layers, your snaps and your styles together become your master template in Lesson 6.
Count Blocks and Make a Door Schedule
The client asks: “How many doors and windows?” Don’t count by hand.
- AutoCAD 2022 and newer: type COUNT, pick a door, and AutoCAD lists the total and highlights each one.
- Any version: run DATAEXTRACTION, select the door and window blocks, include the Name, Count and attribute values, and output to an AutoCAD table or Excel.
You now have a door and window schedule that is always correct, because it is counted from the drawing itself.
Block vs Xref: Which One?
| Block | Xref (External Reference) | |
|---|---|---|
| Stored | Inside your drawing | Separate file, linked |
| Best for | Repeated small items (doors, symbols, title block) | Whole drawings (architect’s plan under your structural plan) |
| Updates | When you redefine it | Automatically when the other file changes |
We will use Xrefs in Lesson 6 when we set up sheets.
Common Block Problems and Fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Block doesn’t take the layer colour | Geometry drawn on its own layer | Redefine with geometry on layer 0, ByLayer |
| Inserted block is huge or tiny | Insert units mismatch | Set INSUNITS = 4 (mm) in both block and drawing; check block units in BLOCK dialog |
| Edited the block but some copies didn’t change | Those copies were exploded or are a different block name | Replace them with the correct block |
| New attribute not showing on old inserts | Inserts made before the change | ATTSYNC |
| Insert doesn’t ask for attribute values | ATTREQ = 0 | Set ATTREQ = 1 |
| Attribute dialog doesn’t appear | ATTDIA = 0 | Set ATTDIA = 1 for a dialog |
| Can’t delete an old block name | It is still used somewhere, even nested | Find it with COUNT or QSELECT, delete, then PU |
| File is huge | Unused blocks from copied drawings | PU (PURGE) all, then -PURGE → Regapps |
Beginner trap: Don’t explode blocks to “edit one”. You lose the link to the definition and the count goes wrong. Use BEDIT to change all, or make a new block if one really needs to be different.
10-Minute Practice Exercise: Room With Doors, Grid and Title Block
Use the room from Lesson 3’s exercise (3000 × 3600 internal, 230 mm walls).
- Create the DOOR-900 block on layer 0 with the base point at the hinge.
- Insert it on A-DOOR at the door opening.
- Turn it into a dynamic block with widths 750/900/1000 and a flip action. Change it to 750 and flip it.
- Create the GRID-BUBBLE block with a
GRIDattribute. - Draw grid lines on the wall centre lines and insert bubbles A, B (horizontal) and 1, 2 (vertical) on A-GRID.
- Create a simple A3 title block with at least DWG_TITLE, DWG_NO, SCALE, DATE attributes and fill them in.
- Run COUNT (or DATAEXTRACTION) to count your doors.
- Save the title block with W to your library folder.
If changing one door’s width in the Block Editor updates the definition everywhere, you’ve mastered blocks.
Key Takeaways
- A block = draw once, use everywhere, change once.
- Draw block geometry on layer 0, ByLayer, and insert on the correct layer.
- Choose a logical base point: hinge, bubble edge, sheet corner.
- Attributes turn blocks into data: grid labels, door marks, title blocks.
- Dynamic blocks replace many fixed sizes with one smart block.
- Keep a WBLOCK library and count with COUNT or DATAEXTRACTION.
- Never explode blocks. Use BEDIT and ATTSYNC.
AutoCAD Blocks FAQs
How do I create a block in AutoCAD?
Type B (BLOCK), give it a name, pick a base point, select the objects and click OK. Draw the objects on layer 0 first so the block takes the layer it is inserted on.
What is the difference between BLOCK and WBLOCK?
BLOCK saves the block inside the current drawing only. WBLOCK writes it out as a separate DWG file so you can insert it into any drawing.
Why should block objects be on layer 0?
Objects on layer 0 inside a block take on the layer of the block insert. This lets the block follow the colour, lineweight and freeze state of the layer you insert it on.
What are attributes in AutoCAD?
Attributes are text fields inside a block. The block geometry stays the same, but each insert can have its own value, such as a grid label or drawing number.
How do I update attributes in existing blocks?
After editing attributes in the Block Editor or BATTMAN, run ATTSYNC and select the block name. All existing inserts update.
How do I count blocks in AutoCAD?
In AutoCAD 2022 and newer, use the COUNT command. In older versions, use BCOUNT from Express Tools or the DATAEXTRACTION wizard.
What is a dynamic block?
A dynamic block has parameters and actions that let one block change shape, size or visibility. A single dynamic door can switch between 750, 900 and 1000 mm and flip its swing.
Should I use a block or an Xref?
Use blocks for small repeated items such as doors and symbols. Use Xrefs to link whole drawings, such as an architect’s plan underneath your structural layout.
