I need a rough steel quantity (kg) for a G+1 RCC framed house, 1,200 sq ft per floor, before asking suppliers for quotes. Is the 4 kg per sq ft thumb rule still valid for Fe500?

Yes — for a normal RCC framed house (G to G+2), 3.5 to 4.5 kg per sq ft of built-up area is a sensible budgeting range, and 4 kg/sq ft is the usual middle value.

Built-up area = 1,200 × 2 floors = 2,400 sq ft
Steel ≈ 2,400 × 4 kg = 9,600 kg ≈ 9.6 tonnes

Adjust for your case:

  • Use 3–3.5 kg/sq ft for a simple single-storey house with short spans.
  • Use 4.5–5 kg/sq ft for long spans, cantilevers or seismic zone IV–V.
  • Add 3–5% wastage for cutting and laps.

This is only for budgeting. For ordering, prepare a bar bending schedule from the structural drawings — the BBS Generator on this site does that.
