Free AutoCAD Course for Civil Engineers (6 Lessons, 2026)

Most AutoCAD tutorials teach you buttons. This free AutoCAD course for civil engineers teaches you how to make real civil drawings: drawings a contractor can build from, an examiner can mark, and a client can approve.

It’s free, it’s written for civil engineering students and site engineers, and every lesson ends with a practice exercise that builds on the one before. By Lesson 6 you will have a complete, correctly scaled PDF sheet and your own professional template.

Who This Course Is For

  • Civil engineering students preparing for drawing submissions, projects and internships
  • Fresh graduates who need AutoCAD for their first job interview
  • Site engineers who want to read, edit and print drawings without asking the office
  • Diploma students and draughtspersons who want to work faster and cleaner

You don’t need any previous AutoCAD experience. If you’ve never opened AutoCAD, start with the warm-up guides below.

Before You Start: Warm-Up Guides

Get comfortable with the screen and basic drawing first. Each takes 10–15 minutes.

  1. AutoCAD for Civil Engineers: The Complete Beginner’s Guide: the big picture and a learning roadmap
  2. AutoCAD Interface Explained: ribbon, command line, status bar, model and layout tabs
  3. AutoCAD Units Setup: set millimetres correctly before you draw anything
  4. AutoCAD Line Command: coordinates and drawing your first lines

AutoCAD Course for Civil Engineers: The 6 Core Lessons

AutoCAD course for civil engineers roadmap: 6 lessons from layers to plot to PDF
The 6-lesson path: each lesson builds on the drawing from the one before.

Lesson 1: AutoCAD Layers for Civil Engineering

Read Lesson 1 →

Organise every drawing the professional way. You’ll learn a civil layer naming system (C-ROAD, S-COLM, A-WALL, G-DIMS…), colours, linetypes and how to freeze and lock layers.

Key commands: LA (LAYER), LAYISO, LAYOFF, LAYFRZ
Bonus: Create all layers in one command with LISP

Lesson 2: OSNAP, Ortho & Polar Tracking

Read Lesson 2 →

Draw with 100% accuracy. Running vs one-time snaps, the best OSNAP settings for civil work, Ortho for straight walls and Polar Tracking for ramps and road bends.

Key commands: F3 (OSNAP), F8 (Ortho), F10 (Polar), F11 (Object Snap Tracking)
Practice: Plot, setback and driveway
Bonus: SNAPSET AutoLISP

Lesson 3: Dimension & Text Styles

Read Lesson 3 →

Make dimensions and text print at the right size, every time. A text height chart for every scale, step-by-step dimension style setup, showing metres while drawing in mm, and the three-string method for floor plans.

Key commands: ST (STYLE), D (DIMSTYLE), DLI, DCO, DBA, DIMSPACE, MLEADER
Practice: Dimension a room and plot
Bonus: TCSDIM AutoLISP: all text and dimension styles in one command

Lesson 4: Hatching for Civil Drawings

Read Lesson 4 →

Show materials clearly in sections. Patterns for earth, PCC, RCC, brick, sand and stone, the right hatch scale for 1:50 and 1:100, and fixes for “boundary not closed”.

Key commands: H (HATCH), HE (HATCHEDIT), HATCHTOBACK, HPLAYER
Practice: Isolated footing section

Lesson 5: Blocks & Attributes

Read Lesson 5 →

Draw once, use everywhere. Door and grid bubble blocks, a title block with attributes, a dynamic door for 750/900/1000 mm, a block library, and automatic door counts.

Key commands: B (BLOCK), I (INSERT), W (WBLOCK), BE (BEDIT), ATT (ATTDEF), ATTSYNC, COUNT
Practice: Room with doors, grid and title block
Related: Grid Bubble Placement in AutoCAD

Lesson 6: Layouts, Viewports & Plot to PDF

Read Lesson 6 →

Finish the job. Layouts and locked viewports, annotative scaling, line weights and CTB files, Xrefs, multi-sheet PDFs, and your master template (.dwt).

Key commands: MV (MVIEW), OBJECTSCALE, XR (XREF), PUBLISH, ETRANSMIT
Practice: Your first complete sheet, measured and verified

What You’ll Be Able to Do After This Course

  • ✅ Set up a new drawing correctly in under a minute (from your own template)
  • ✅ Draw accurately with snaps, never “by eye”
  • ✅ Organise drawings with a professional layer system
  • ✅ Dimension and annotate to drawing standards (SP 46 lettering sizes)
  • ✅ Show materials clearly with hatching
  • ✅ Use blocks, attributes and dynamic blocks to work 3× faster
  • ✅ Plot a true-scale PDF with proper line weights
  • ✅ Work with other people’s drawings using Xrefs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this AutoCAD course for civil engineers really free?

Yes. All six lessons, warm-up guides, practice exercises and AutoLISP routines are free to read and use.

Do I need prior AutoCAD experience?

No. Start with the warm-up guides on the interface, units and the line command, then follow Lessons 1 to 6 in order.

Which AutoCAD version do I need?

AutoCAD 2020 or newer is recommended. Most steps also work in older versions and AutoCAD LT. A few features, such as the COUNT command, need AutoCAD 2022 or newer, and AutoLISP routines don’t run in older versions of AutoCAD LT.

How long does it take to learn AutoCAD for civil engineering?

With 30–45 minutes of daily practice, you can complete this course in about four weeks. Becoming fast and confident on real projects usually takes another two to three months of regular work.

Is AutoCAD still useful for civil engineers in 2026?

Yes. Even with BIM tools like Revit and Civil 3D, AutoCAD remains the standard for 2D working drawings, site layouts, detailing and drawing exchange in most civil projects.

Does this course use metric or imperial units?

The lessons use millimetres and Indian/ISO drawing practice. Lesson 3 includes notes for feet-and-inch drawings used in the US.

Will I get a certificate?

This course does not include a certificate. Your completed practice drawings make a stronger portfolio for interviews.
