SSC JE 2026 Paper 1 is scheduled for 2 to 6 November 2026. That leaves about three weeks. This is not the time to start new books. It is the time to revise the topics that come every year, practise mock tests, and avoid silly negative marks. This page gives you the exam pattern, the most important Civil topics, a 21-day revision plan and a one-page list of values that are asked again and again.
Always check the latest notice and admit card on ssc.gov.in. Dates can change.
SSC JE Paper 1 exam pattern
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 |
| B | General Awareness | 50 | 50 |
| C | General Engineering (Civil & Structural) | 100 | 100 |
| Total | 200 | 200 | |
What this means: half of Paper 1 is Civil. A strong Civil score with safe Reasoning and GA is the winning plan. Do not leave Reasoning for the end. It is the easiest part to score in with practice.

Most important Civil topics (revise these first)
Based on the pattern of past SSC JE papers, these areas give the most questions for the least effort:
| Priority | Subject | Focus on |
|---|---|---|
| 🔴 High | Building Materials | Cement types & tests, bricks, stones, timber, lime, paints. Lots of direct one-liners. |
| 🔴 High | Concrete Technology | w/c ratio, workability tests, curing, admixtures, mix grades, IS 456 values |
| 🔴 High | Soil Mechanics | Phase relations, Atterberg limits, permeability, consolidation, compaction, bearing capacity |
| 🔴 High | Surveying | Chain & compass, levelling, theodolite, contours, errors and corrections |
| 🟠 Medium | Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics | Properties, Bernoulli, flow measurement, pipe losses, open channel basics |
| 🟠 Medium | RCC Design (IS 456) | Limit state values, cover, development length, slab/beam/column rules |
| 🟠 Medium | Estimating & Costing | Units of measurement, methods of estimate, valuation, rate analysis |
| 🟠 Medium | Transportation | Highway geometrics, pavement materials & tests, railways basics |
| 🟢 Normal | Environmental, Irrigation, Steel Design, SOM, Theory of Structures | Standard formulas and definitions |
21-day revision plan
| Days | Civil (3–4 hrs) | Reasoning + GA (2 hrs) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Building Materials (full) + Concrete Technology | Series, analogy, coding-decoding · Static GK: polity |
| 4–6 | Soil Mechanics | Blood relations, direction · Static GK: history |
| 7–9 | Surveying + Estimating | Syllogism, Venn diagrams · Geography |
| 10–12 | Hydraulics + Irrigation | Non-verbal reasoning · General science |
| 13–15 | RCC + Steel + SOM formulas | Mixed practice · Current affairs (last 6 months) |
| 16–18 | Transportation + Environmental | One full mock test daily + analysis |
| 19–21 | Revise your own short notes only | Two mocks + previous year paper |
One-page quick values (very often asked)
Cement and concrete
- Initial setting time of OPC: not less than 30 min. Final: not more than 600 min.
- Standard consistency test: Vicat apparatus. Soundness test: Le Chatelier (10 mm max for OPC) and autoclave.
- Density of cement ≈ 1,440 kg/m³. One bag = 50 kg ≈ 0.0347 m³.
- Dry volume factor: 1.54 for concrete, 1.27 for mortar (plaster calculation).
- Nominal mix: M15 = 1:2:4, M20 = 1:1.5:3 (IS 456 Table 9 notes).
- Max w/c for RCC (IS 456 Table 5): mild 0.55, moderate 0.50, severe 0.45, very severe 0.45, extreme 0.40. Full explanation.
- Modulus of elasticity of concrete Ec = 5000√fck (N/mm²).
- Flexural strength fcr = 0.7√fck.
- Slump for normal RCC work about 25–75 mm; compaction factor and Vee-Bee for low workability.
RCC (IS 456)
- Partial safety factors: concrete 1.5, steel 1.15. Load factor (DL + LL) 1.5.
- Nominal cover: mild 20 mm, moderate 30, severe 45, very severe 50, extreme 75. Footings min 50 mm, columns min 40 mm.
- xu,max/d: Fe 250 = 0.53, Fe 415 = 0.48, Fe 500 = 0.46.
- Min tension steel in beams: As/bd = 0.85/fy. Min steel in slabs: 0.12% (HYSD), 0.15% (mild steel).
- Columns: min 0.8%, max 4% (practical), min 4 bars in rectangular, 6 in circular, min bar 12 mm.
- Span/effective depth (basic): cantilever 7, simply supported 20, continuous 26.
- Weight of steel bar = D²/162 kg/m. Chart here.
Soil mechanics
- e = n/(1 − n), n = e/(1 + e), Se = wG.
- Plasticity index PI = LL − PL. Consistency index = (LL − w)/PI.
- Darcy’s law v = ki. Coefficient of permeability: constant head (coarse soils), falling head (fine soils).
- Standard Proctor: 2.6 kg rammer, 310 mm drop, 3 layers, 25 blows. Modified: 4.89 kg, 450 mm, 5 layers, 25 blows.
- Terzaghi consolidation: time factor Tv = Cv·t/d².
Surveying
- Metric chain: 20 m or 30 m, 100 or 150 links.
- Combined curvature and refraction correction = 0.0673 d² (d in km, answer in m).
- Sum of interior angles of a closed traverse = (2n − 4) × 90°.
- Check in levelling: ΣBS − ΣFS = Last RL − First RL.
Hydraulics
- Bernoulli: p/γ + v²/2g + z = constant.
- Darcy–Weisbach head loss hf = fLv²/(2gD).
- Reynolds number in pipes: laminar < 2,000; turbulent > 4,000.
- Most economical rectangular channel: b = 2y, R = y/2.
How to avoid negative marks
- With 0.25 negative, a guess is worth it only if you can remove at least one or two options with confidence.
- Do the paper in three rounds: sure answers first, then 50-50 ones, then leave the rest.
- Read “NOT”, “EXCEPT” and units carefully. Many wrong answers come from reading too fast.
- In every mock, write down why each wrong answer was wrong. That list is your best revision book.
Exam day checklist
- Admit card printout and original photo ID (same name as in the application).
- Reach the centre early. Check reporting time on the admit card.
- Sleep well the night before. A fresh mind scores more than one extra hour of reading.
